A Million in Prizes: The Anthology $22.99 If you’re willing to count his work in such early regional bands as the Prime Movers and the Iguanas, Iggy Pop has been playing rock & roll for over 40 years as this compilation hits the stores — meaning there are guys in big-league rock bands who’ve spent years trying to be Iggy but weren’t even alive when the guy first started plugging into the Real O Mind. That, dear readers, is influence, and while the man has had more than his share of creative ups and downs over those four decades, one spin of A Million in Prizes: The Anthology tells you why Iggy has always mattered, and still does — he has never lost the ability to plug into the primal madness and furious belief that separates great rock & roll from ordinary stuff, and he can call up that near-demonic passion on a regular basis. While this isn’t the first career-inclusive Iggy compilation, A Million in Prizes is comprised of two full-loaded CDs, which gives it a scale and scope that bests its closest competition, 1996′s solid Nude & Rude: The Best of Iggy Pop, and it also gives full props to his work with the Stooges, featuring 11 songs from that band’s various incarnations (though whose idea was it to only include one track from the epochal Fun House? For shame!). As for the solo stuff, this set follows the bizarre roller-coaster ride from the gloomy self-reappraisal of his albums with David Bowie through his desperate efforts to find his own solo voice in the 1980s to his reemergence in the new millennium as an artist who can merge mind and muscle with equal force. While not every album is represented on A Million in Prizes, this offers an accurate and compelling look at the Iggy time line, and the mastering is strong, clear, and loud (especially on the earlier material, which has long merited aural refurbishing). The liner essays from Danny Fields and Lenny Kaye are excellent, and Iggy sums himself pretty well when he tells Fields, “I get up in the morning, I look in the mirror, and I think, ‘Hey, yo… |

Amusement Parks in Arkansas: Dogpatch Usa, Magic Springs and Crystal Falls, Dinosaur World $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Dogpatch USA is an abandoned theme park located on State Highway 7 between the cities of Harrison and Jasper in the state of Arkansas, USA, an area known today as Marble Falls. It was opened to the public in 1968 and was based on the popular comic strip Li’l Abner, which was created by cartoonist Al Capp and set in a fictional village called Dogpatch. Dogpatch USA was a commercial success in its early years, and investors, buoyed with optimism about the park’s future, decided to pursue extensive and heavily financed expansion in the form of a sister park, “Marble Falls”, designed as a ski resort and convention center. But the following years saw a combination of characters and unforeseen events transform the high hopes of investors into a financial roller coaster ride which eventually ended in the park’s demise. Ownership of the park changed hands many times throughout its history, and it was finally closed in 1993. Since that time much of the property of the twin parks has been neglected and frequently vandalized, and portions of the land are either entangled in legal issues, in a state of redevelopment, or for sale once again. In 1966, Albert Raney, Sr. decided to sell his family’s Ozark trout farm and listed it with O.J. Snow, a Harrison real estate agent. Snow examined the property and decided that the Raney farm was ideal for an amusement park based on pioneer themesan idea he had entertained for years. He noted that features of the area resembled those pictured in the Li’l Abner comic strip: Mill Creek Canyon at the base of a 55-foot (16.8 m) waterfall was deep enough to be the “bottomless canyon”, and the nearby tourist attraction Mystic Caverns (also owned by the Raney family) could become “Dogpatch cave”, where “kickapoo joy juice” w… More: |

Amusement Parks in Oregon: Thrill-Ville Usa, Oaks Amusement Park, Jantzen Beach, Pixieland, Enchanted Forest, Lotus Isle $8.59 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Thrill-Ville USA was an amusement park in Turner, Oregon, United States. The park was located next to the Enchanted Forest south of Salem on Interstate 5. Opened in the 1970s, the park grew to more than 20 rides before closing in 2008. Rides included roller coasters, go karts, classic carnival rides (such as Octopus, Rock-O-Plane, Tilt-A-Whirl, Paratrooper, and many more) a 55′ double water slide, and a regular slide. The park also had an area called “Thrill-Zone” which included a Sky Coaster, Big Sling ride, SCAD Freefall Tower, and Turbo Force. In the early 1970s what later became Thrill-Ville USA opened as a go-cart track. The Vettrus family added the go-carts as a childrens amusement feature next to the familys recreational vehicle (RV) park. The Vettrus brothers later owned and operated the amusement park that grew to more than 20 different rides. In 1984, the park added a 55 foot tall waterslide. The park was renamed as Thrill-Ville USA in the early 1990s. Marion County told the operators in the early 1990s that the parks land needed to be re-zoned or face possible closure. In 1995, Thrill-Ville was allowed to stay open after meeting a variety of conditions set by the county including noise abatement and establishing a parking plan. By 1999, the park had an annual attendance of 200,000 people. In May 2008, the park announced that due to higher insurance costs and a slowing economy that the park would not open for its usual season of Memorial Day to Labor Day in 2008. The park also said that Thrill-Ville USA may not ever re-open. Roller coaster and slide in 2009The park had two roller coasters, The Ripper and the Little Ripper. The bigger one was 60 feet (18 m) tall. Another ride was the Skycoaster, which lifted people… More: |
